attempted to remove the violence implicit in the idea of majority-rule. It has followed a political process
without indulging into party-politics or power-politics. It has thus presented a practical expression of
lokniti. Consensus decision making, participatory democracy, local self-governance, sustainable
ecological management and knowledge-sharing are not only contemporary processes but also universal
ones. The significance of Mendha lies in the fact that it has shown that Vinoba’s philosophy and politics
is not utopian but one that could be easily put into practice. This is a lesson not only for villages in India
but also for the whole world. Scores of villages in India are now being endowed with community
forestry rights and Mendha’s example would illuminate their path.
