quality of darkness Rajas is all that lies between these two extremes. The Bhagavad Geeta shows the
best, the better, the good on the one side and the bad, the worse and the worst on the other side. The
half – way between these two are these nine bases of behavior that influence social action. Sumati
Kumati Sabake Ura Basahin- Good and Evil reside in every heart- select the virtuous, the best and
forget the rest that is all one can do. Social service worth the name has to be meticulously kept on the
side of the proper, just and bright end by avoiding the influences of Rajas and Tamas Guna. All these
three ingredients are present in everything but you have to select where sattva is on the winning side
i.e. proportionately more bright and effective. The nine subjects thus dealt are all intrinsically good and
helpful to society. But without the inner light, they tilt towards darkness both inside and outside. When
practical contingencies are to be faced, one does not have to refer to scriptures, but to a cleansed
awakened, benevolent conscience formed out of accumulated experience.
Conclusion
Vinoba felt that his whole philosophy of Samya- Yoga i.e. liberty, equality, fraternity and all
pervasive justice is incorporated into Sarvodaya’s constructive program. Vinoba himself summarized
his idea of a utopian heaven on earth in three words- Truth, Non- violence and Compassion.
There is one Verse of the Bhagavad Geeta which says in nutshell that there is no happiness
without peace, there is no peace without self- sacrifice, there is no self-sacrifice without a wise sense of
appropriation, and there is no sense of equality or brotherhood without developing the quality of self-

restraint. The psychological welfare of the world depends not on licentious sense of gratification
without respecting other’s needs. But the quality of love is much deeper than frivolousness, so much so
that controlling completely of one’s senses is like controlling the steam of any energy thus making
possible the realization of God. This is the highest pinnacle of experiences which a human is capable of
and for which man must attempt in this very life. Even in cities, small all-inclusive cooperation can be
worked out through Municipal Council, where 1000 or less families can build up a ‘face to face fidelity
and loyalty’. Thus Vinoba has floated around an idea with an ideal. “Ideas have no fences. They have
no boundaries. Language, religion, senses, nationalism and every other barricade is transgressed by
ideas. Ideas have an entry into every noble heart inspiring individuals, capturing his/ her imagination,
transforming him and making him angelic in performance.
When somebody gives ex-gratia and somebody receives without burden, that movement is the
movement of great peace, depth and purity. At that movement, a sure moral energy evolves in the
atmosphere of the world. Sooner or later, it will create its impression on the far away fronts of the Earth
towards a change for the better. This will be known as the Vinobian process and shall abide in the
hearts of posterity.
